My name is Brian Wilkerson and I am 24 years old currently living in Baltimore, Maryland. In 1999, my father, brother, and I started a small performance parts shop called Mid-Atlantic Motorsports in which we mainly sold performance parts for Japanese cars. Now that I am an owner of MA-Motorsports, I have changed my focus from just sales of parts to also installation and fabrication.
I’ve been building my own cars ever since I can remember and I have always taken a great deal of pride in my work – much like I do my driving. I have been involved in motor sports since I first received my driver’s license at the age of 16. In 2001, I began drag racing and tuning my Honda Civic which I consistently ran a low 12 seconds in the ¼ mile. I then moved onto road racing using my father’s 87’ Porsche 911. Always eager to improve, I attended about 6 to 8 High Performance Drivers Education (HPDE) classes per year from 2003 to the present day.
I quickly moved up from a novice driver into the highest level group and instructor status in only 2 years. However, I kindly declined instructor status to devote more time to bettering myself as a driver in road racing as well as drifting, which at the time was growing in popularity.
In my second year of HPDE classes my father and I purchased a 1991 Porsche 911 Turbo. Much of my education about car control in a high powered car I owe to this Porsche. I went to several Track Days and HPDE events all over the East Coast including Watkins Glenn, Virginia International Raceway, Summit Point Raceway, and Sebring International Raceway. I proved to be the faster driver in my run group and decided I should try out for my Porsche Club of America Rookie Racing license for PCA Club Racing which I attained down the road in 2005. While I loved Racing Porsches and being one of the top drivers in my run group, I always had drifting on my mind.
It was in 2003 when I was introduced to drifting by a friend when I attended my first drift event held by US Drift with my newly acquired and self-built Nissan 240SX. At the time it was just a street car that I used to drive to get from point A to point B. Ever since this first drift event 4 years ago, I have been hooked on the sport. I am constantly using all my resources so I can continue to drift and support my passion for motor sports.
I began competing in drift events in 2005. I knew the only way I would get better was to challenge myself by competing against guys that were better than me; so I did – and I made sure to drive with them as often as possible. Over the years I have had some help from friends who have a passion for drifting as well such as Matt Martin and Formula D driver Vaughn Gittin Jr. These guys helped me to create my own personal drifting style and taught me how to attack at competitions.
Currently, after all of my achievements and obstacles, I am quite happy with my driving and am finding myself on the podium more often than not. I look forward to competing in bigger series like Formula D and D1 Grand Prix so I can better hone my competition skills and one day stand on the podium at these events as well.
Currently the car I use is the one I used at D1 Grand Prix in Englishtown, NJ in the Top 16 against Imamura. My aggressiveness in this intense battle caused me to hit the wall, damaging my car. However, in order to keep competing I decided to work hard to make it drivable again until recourses allow me to finish the build of my new race car chassis. I am very excited to see what the future holds for me in my drifting career and I am prepared to make the necessary sacrifices to watch my dreams become reality.
